What is this Country’s Affection or infection with Nancy Grace?

For nearly six months (6) months I have been watching this train wreck called the Nancy Grace Show on HLN. The obvious aside, yes,the show provides the network with ratings from Middle-class to lower income America, predominantly women (who otherwise would not watch HLN). I can also further characterize the audience; based upon the “live” questions asked of Ms. Grace, the average educational level of the viewer is sophomoric high school. My point? This is not a typical HLN viewer. So again, I can only assume the heads at HLN are simply bowing to the lowest common denominator - ratings and money. If Nancy’s demo’s are any different than I describe she needs better call-in screening from her producers. My summation, The Nancy Grace Show is a Nightmare and panders only to the lowest reasoning for programming .

Nancy Grace misrepresents nearly every legitimate point made by any of her guests with the exception of those who validate her agenda. Ms. Grace’s style of interviewing is rude and cutting and she demeans all her professional guests regardless if they are fellow Attorneys, Doctors, Producers of her show or experts brought in by her staff. She barely asks a question of anyone (the lady loves to hear herself talk) but when she does ask a question she then prompts her interviewee for her desired response. God help the person who does not provide the answer she is searching to gather. (BTW, this demonstrates her insecurity with professional interviewing skills as well as her deep concern for her perspective on a story/case.)

When it comes to her non-professional or non-broadcast savvy guests (usually a friend or family member of the featured story) she can be equally as cutting and always talks over them. Nancy’s claim to fame comes from three sources; 1.) She had a fiancĂ©e killed a couple of decades ago (she is herself a proclaimed victim) 2.) She is a former Atlanta Prosecutor and 3.) She now has twins, which, by the way, she has added to the show in the form of a self narrated family album segment. The family photo element of her broadcast offers her viewers benign family photos to ogle. (Gee, if she only had six more kids the show would still be laughable but not under the pretense of news)

Nancy’s interview skills are atrocious. The Nancy Grace Show (if reviewed carefully) has very little substantial content but provides a significant amount of subjective theories presented as facts. The show is consistently changing Defense attorney’s as counter points to the pointed former Prosecutor. I am sure the rotating Defense attorneys are in large part do to the manner in which they are berated by Ms. Grace. The Nancy Grace show is not News and information programming. This program is a revamp of the Joe McCarthy Committee Meetings of the 1950's. If your case is featured on Nancy Grace - you are guilty! Why have a trial, discussion or a plausable defense? This show is honest on only one point –It is the Nancy Grace Show and it is all about Nancy.

The old joke used to be, “you know you are going to have a bad day if Mike Wallace and a 60 minute crew were in your front office”. The new version needs to be – “you know you will ALWAYS look like an idiot if you appear on the Nancy Grace Show, actually you are an idiot if you do appear on the Nancy Grace Show”. The Entertainment value of Nancy Grace is imagining what the audience looks like? If you could sit on the Broadcast set and view back through the camera lenses, how many doling banjos would you observe? This show appeals to those who not only enjoy watching train wrecks but would actually participate in creating a train wreck for their own entertainment. You think that is harsh? Nancy Grace’s viewers have created this train wreck by watching and providing ratings! – In an attempt to paraphrase a Nancy line; “So let’s unleash the comments”!

Why are Victims often treated as Villains?

I have been watching a lot of News TV as of late. OK, that is mistake number 1. Yet, I really cannot believe the manner in which Cable TV News turns Victims into Villains. Ok, mistake No. 2 – for the ratings, duh! But honestly, where is the sense of journalistic integrity. Here are a few examples of what I have seen on TV beginning with the most exploited.

Casey Anthony is in jail and remains charged for the horrific death of her daughter Caley Anthony. Yet, her parents George and Cindy Anthony have remained a focus by the media, news journalists and neighbors. Let’s just get this straight. George and Cindy are the grandparents of a child who was murdered. These same two indivigauls currently have their daughter in a Florida County Jail facing charges that may generate the death penalty. Further, they have endured Neighbors and citizens protesting in front of their home in shifts 24 hours per day. Every element of their lives have been examined from Georges emotional breakdown, the depositions from a civil case, alleged affairs and comments on who wears the pants in the family. What is up with that? I am surprised these parents/ grandparents are even able to form a word much less a sentence under this much stress. These two people deserve empathy, sympathy, support and privacy from the community. They are Victims not Villains.

Let’s try this one. A mother in Detroit, Jennifer Buchanan, was notified at the same moment as the rest of the world that her daughter Nevaeh Buchanan’s body was found dead near a river by two recreational fishermen. The other evening I was watching an interview on the Nancy Grace show. Nancy was interviewing the grieving Mother Jennifer Buchanan. Ms. Grace spent more time ripping this young mother apart for allowing the circumstances to occur for her daughter’s death than she ever did in gathering real facts. OK, Mom made piss poor judgments regarding friends, associates, boyfriends all the way down the line. But again, the former Prosecutor, now talking head is slamming the Mother who just lost her child. No Points Nancy, – actually big loss of points on the scale of credibility vs. ratings.

The point made in this article is the point I make consistently. The Media provides ratings and opinion, often as fact. They cross the line and turn victims into villains. It is all about a form of entrainment and anyone can become victimized. Don’t believe the same cannot happen to you.

Here comes the Next Generation re-debating the issues!

Carrie Prejean, now former Miss Universe, is appearing on every cable talk show and Television News opportunity available claiming the cornerstone to her demise as Miss Universe is due to her position on traditional marriage. (Miss P. is Pro upholding the exclusivity of marriage between a Man and a Woman).

While in the middle of this tantalizing controversy surrounding Miss Universe, Chas (formally known as Chastity) Bono, daughter now son, of the famed Sonny and Cher Bono announces “he” is under going the rigorous transformation of gender change.

So what is the real point and why are all the News networks, Blogs and Entertainment sites covering this ongoing controversy? The issue is very simple, California Prop. 8. The Ciaos surrounding CA. Prop. 8 have involved legislative action, a popular vote and Court room rulings. All of these efforts have now spilled or been imposed (depending on your perspective) into the lives of everyday people. Are we surprised? Not really, after all within the State of California is the empire that controls a HUGE amount of News, Newsmakers, Television Networks, Radio Networks, Entertainment sources and approximately 12 percent of the entire United States population. There has been Millions of dollars as well as millions of hours expended by both sides to promote their respective agendas.

The point of this article is really not the issue of Tans-gender or Same-sex vs. Traditional Marriage. The Point of this article is to reaffirm the perspective that is rarely discussed. The East coast and West Coast control the media. We in the middle are simply the receivers of the information and are often swayed in the most subtle of manners in believing what is important. Now, with the same precision, technological efforts, and manipulative agendas the “next generation” (a 20 something and a 30 something) will rise to become the icons for the on going debates of the future.

My thoughts, always maintain a healthy skepticism of what you see and hear on produced TV programming. Recognize that Reality TV is not reality and ask yourself if the News as portrayed is relevant to you – or relevant to an agenda. We are the next generation – will we continue to follow the errors of our parents and grandparents by enabling the media to determine our NEWS? Just asking? Why don’t you ask some others?
